Secondary school citizenship partnership announced
Hundreds of schools across the UK are competing to win a unique and life-changing trip for a group of teachers and students to experience Concern Universal's work in partnership with local communities in The Gambia. The winning school will have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to charitable giving, campaigning and volunteering action over the past year, evidenced by the completion of an online diary. The partnership supports Concern Universal's aim to improve young people's capabilities to build a fairer and more sustainable world together. The trip will give the winning school the chance to bring aspects of their own personal and cultural histories into a genuine shared learning experience and outcome. Participants will better understand why their own actions and those of others can have a positive or negative effect on people living in poverty and be more aware of what individuals and groups around the world are doing to successfully tackle poverty and inequality. Both Concern Universal and the Citizenship Foundation believe in the power of young people promoting active citizenship and social action to other young people. The winning school will be supported in advocacy work for Concern Universal on their return, such as in promoting positive engagement in the fight against poverty and inequality through youth media. Giving Nation is the definitive free resource for secondary schools to introduce active citizenship and social action to their students. Currently taking place in over 500 schools nationwide, the Giving Nation Challenge allows students to gain real-life understanding and learning through the dynamic process of creating a short lived social enterprise in order to make a difference to the wider community. The winning school will be announced at the Giving Nation Social Action Awards event during October 2010 It's not too late to enter your school into the award, with the chance to win a trip with Concern Universal or one of several cash prizes towards your school's charitable activities. The deadline for applications is 19th July 2010, visit the Giving Nation website to find out how.
