The gift of a lifetime

Severino from Brazil
Concern Universal reaches over 1.5 million people in 10 of the world's poorest countries every year.

Income from legacies is vital to help us support people in need such as Severino (pictured left) known as Pequeno - meaning Little One.

Pequeno is 12 years old and lives in a shanty-town in the North East of Brazil where hunger, drugs and violence are a daily reality. Pequeno's family is destitute. In order to supplement the family income he became a child worker, scavenging on the local rubbish dump. But now, thanks to the support of our donors, Pequeno attends a day centre, run by Concern Universal's partners, where he is learning to read and write and deal with his aggression.

Making a will can not only help to ensure that your loved ones have a secure future but by leaving a gift to Concern Universal can also help to ensure a future for children like Pequeno too.

How does it work?
A charitable legacy could be a gift of money or of any other assets that you leave behind. While there are a number of options to consider, there are two main types of charitable legacies; pecuniary and residuary. Pecuniary legacies specify a sum of money or item of value to be donated, whilst a residuary legacy allows you to donate a percentage of the net value of your estate or the remaining sum after you have provided for family and friends. Free of inheritance tax, a donation made in your will can also help reduce the tax burden on your estate.

What do you need to do?
Making a Will doesn't have to be costly or complicated. To leave a legacy to charity, you simply need to include details of the donation in your will. This can be done by writing a will, by making an amendment or ‘codicil' to an existing will or by setting up a Trust. Your solicitor or professional adviser will be able to tell you more. And should you decide to leave a gift in your Will to us - THANK YOU! Naturally, we would be grateful if you could let us know and this will be treated in the strictest confidence and is not binding in any way.

A guide on making a will has been produced by the organisation ‘Remember a Charity' and can be found here (select link to open the Remember a Charity website in a new window.)
