But don't just take our word for it!

Owen Fleet, administration volunteer:

"My name is Owen and I volunteered to work with Concern Universal as a way to occupy my time while between jobs. Far from being used only for menial filing and photocopying duties, I was involved in many interesting and worthy projects such as World Water Day and West Africa Farm Experience where my skills were appreciated. Ultimately it all paid off as I am now employed in the charity sector doing a job I enjoy and I have no doubt that this would not be the case if not for the valuable experience gained at Concern Universal. I made some good friends at CU and have many fond memories so I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who wants to do something worthwhile for themselves and others."

Ruth Volunteer in HerefordRuth Vonberg, 22, Volunteer Faith-based Fundraising Co-ordinator: "I began volunteering with Concern Universal in August 2007 when I moved to Hereford. I would like to build a career in international development and thought it would be great to get some experience. I feel so lucky to be offered the chance to learn about so many different parts of fundraising. I have talked to lots of different people and so my confidence and presentation skills have really improved. The office also has a very friendly atmosphere - everyone is helpful and cheery and so it is a joy to volunteer here."

Clive Volunteer in HerefordClive Caffall, Volunteer Environmental Consultant: "I had worked in international development before volunteering at CU, but always for large funders such as the government. I was keen to get more directly involved ‘on the other side'. I knew of CU's work and had been impressed. So after a move to Herefordshire I offered to help at CU. Drawing on past experience I have been surveying the environmental work of each CU country programme with a view to establishing a policy for the whole organisation. I also carry out background research on current issues such as climate change and carbon trading. This led to having a go at calculating CU's carbon footprint, which was a new skill for me. I find it good to be dealing with things that are in the news in a more practical way. CU's staff are really appreciative of the volunteers' efforts. And it is even more rewarding to know that it all contributes to the charity's vital work."

Helen Volunteer in HerefordHelen Wadham, Volunteer Researcher: "I came across CU while looking for a case study for my MSc dissertation on business/NGO partnerships as CU is especially active in that area. I wrote my dissertation on CU's collaboration with The Tetley Group in Malawi, which has provided 30,000 people with access to safe water and sanitation facilities. The value of the work they are doing together inspired me to carry on and do a PhD! Consequently, as part of my PhD fieldwork, I am now volunteering two days a week with CU to support its work on encouraging business to get more involved in sustainable development. CU has a real commitment to contributing to wider debates about development and global issues more generally, which makes it an ideal place for anyone with an interest in sustainability or developing countries to volunteer. People always welcome the opportunity to discuss ideas with people from beyond the organisation and you feel that your work can make a difference."
